TLC’s 90s smash hit “No Scrubs” is virtually untouchable at this point. It’s undeniably in one of the best songs of all time and the impact it had on music back then, and even now, is unimaginable for most artists to achieve. That’s why back in around 2013, when a friend of mine told me about Bastille covering the iconic track, I was a little skeptical. The group had risen to fame with their song “Pompeii” which was all over the radio in 2013 and although I enjoyed what the group had been putting out, I was worried about how they were going to mix their indie pop sound with a classic R&B/hip hop track. But it worked out rather well considering this cover was probably my third most listened to song of that year. Every so often I listen back to this and am amazed even now at how nicely it was arranged. I’m a firm believer in the “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” motto, but even I must admit that some things don’t need to be broken to get a remix every once in a while.
