I really hate being one of those people who says “I liked their old stuff better” but when it comes to Maroon 5, I must admit that I favor their first few releases a lot more than their recent material. The group has changed so drastically over the years since their debut twenty years ago, and while I still enjoy tracks from their most recent albums, Song About Jane is just at another level in every aspect. Lead singer Adam Levine’s vocals fit so perfectly with this funk rock sound that’s tinged with pop melodies and the storytelling lyrics make it feel like a concept album instead of just a collection of songs. It’s sonically one of the groups most cohesive and unique projects and while the idea of funk pop/rock wasn’t exactly new at the time, the group made it sound better than ever. So many of these songs even still live on to this day and are still just as exciting as they were back then, demonstrating a longevity that most artists can only dream of.
