I Prevail – “Blank Space”
Bonus track on Heart vs Mind EP
By now, Taylor Swifts iconic hit single “Blank Space” is undoubtedly one of the best pop songs ever made. It not only helped reinvent her from a country to a pop artist, but it remains as one of the best produced and delivered songs in her entire discography. And listen, I’m a firm believer of the notion of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and haven’t come across very many stellar renditions of this track but I Prevall’s version of it proves that sometimes things don’t necessarily need to be broken to be fixed. The group managed to keep certain pop elements of the original intact, from what sounds like a little bit of synthesizer and a light piano, and most of the original melodies. But what makes it standout is how they smoothly incorporated a heavier guitar, drums, and a mix of clean and unclean vocals to make this song sound like one of their own. If I hadn’t already known Taylor’s version, I wouldn’t have even known that this was a cover. It’s a balanced and well produced take on the legendary song that I’m sure even die hard fans of the original would like it.
