Death Cab For Cutie – “Company Calls”
Track #7 off of We Have The Facts And We’re Voting Yes, released 2000
One of the most legendary and influential indie rock albums remains Death Cab For Cuties sophomore release, We Have The Facts And We’re Voting Yes, and considering it’s elite status it’s hard to believe there were actually no singles released to support it. That basically left listeners free to choose their favorite tracks without any bias on which ones they heard first or most frequently and “Company Calls” happens to be mine. The basis of the song is angsty and cynical, and speaks basically about watching someone you love marry someone else. It’s upbeat in tempo and calm in instrumental but in contrast becomes a bit obsessive and desperate through the lyrics. One really important thing I’ve always considered about this track in particular is how it creates a divide between how you feel and the things you actually do. While the general tone of it is optimistic, even almost inspiring with a smooth buildup and a climax towards the end, the words that are sung over it are anything but. This is a feeling that’s difficult to put into words to really get a grip on but “Company Calls” does exactly that and more.
