Sleeping With Sirens – “Scene Five – With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear”
Track #5 off of If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack, released 2012
One thing that can make or break a band or artist is their level of versatility, determining essentially how able they are to change and evolve. Sleeping With Sirens has proven early on in their career that they are not just capable, but also more than exceptional at providing listeners with different versions of their songs and pushing the boundaries of who they may seem on the surface level. This EP was released after two back to back solid albums, both in the post hardcore/pop punk genre that featured lots of heavy guitars, fast hooks and unclean vocals, but it didn’t go in that direction. Instead, the group opted to make acoustic songs, three of which were completely new tracks and two of which were just acoustic versions of previous songs. “With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear” was originally track #7 off of their debut studio album of the same name released in 2010. Both versions are perfectly fine in their own right, however, I find that this acoustic version really lets the melodies and lyrics shine, which can get a bit lost on the denser original. Also taking into consideration their previous work, this track is delivered with such grace and elegance that it’s almost hard to believe they’re the same group from the few years prior. Not very many bands can seamlessly move from one extreme to the other, and quite honestly, sometimes I can’t even tell which I like better.
