Miley Cyrus – “Drive”

Track #9 off of Bangerz, 2013

When it comes to Miley Cyrus’ 2013 release Bangerz, it’s easy to see why the album received so many mixed reviews. It was a bit jarring at first and hard to get a grip on but at best it showcased Miley’s creative drive like no other and her ability to do something different than her peers. I’ve seen talks about how Bangerz was a bit of a blunder and I just have to say that I don’t agree with that at all. While I can’t say I particularly enjoy the entire track list, there are many moments on the record that are standouts of her career and some of the best songs she’s ever made. “Drive” in particular is one of those moments that really put her talents on display and realistically, it should have been released as a single. It’s electronic nature is reminiscent of her previous 2010 album Can’t Be Tamed but denser, with better production, lyricism and vocal delivery. It’s not too far off from what she’s done before, it’s simply just upgraded and better worked. The heavy beat accompanied by a dark electro-pop feel gives the track a very sleek, mature feel, indicating personal and artistic growth. The wording of the track is also very carefully done, being written about ending a relationship but demonstrating strength to move on instead of wallowing in despair. The entire track is incredibly melodic and catchy, building up to one of the best bridges on the entire project and ending as smoothly as it began.
